Bridgend Athletic Senior Presentation Evening PRESS REPORT
Bridgend Athletic held their 40th Annual Presentation at their clubhouse on Saturday June 21st. The awards were presented by two former Bridgend, Wales and British Lions Gareth Williams and Gareth “Alfie” Thomas. The club would like to thank them both.
Clubman of the Year went to life member and Athletic stalwart David Davison. As well as arranging this award ceremony David has organised many fund raising functions at the club and brought in a considerable amount of much needed revenue through sponsorship deals he has put in place. He is also a founder member of our Athletic Youth team
1st XV player of the year went to season’s joint captain flanker or No8 Sean Williams – nephew of Gareth .Sean is a previous recipient of this award in season 2008-2009 and has played in 173 1st XV fixtures. He bounced back from a serious knee injury which saw him miss the 2010-2011 season and is a very inspirational leader. Best back went to wing or full back Dan Howells who gained in confidence as the season progressed and became a regular as a very pacey player and good tackler. The Daryl Dyke Memorial Award for Most Improved Player went to prop Matt Muir.Matt joined the previous season from Beddau and played in all fixtures this season. His scrummaging and mobility about the field made him a cornerstone of the pack, and we hope he will remain so for many seasons to come.
2ND XV Player of the year went to No 8 Rob Davies. Rob is a very forceful ball carrier and makes the pack tick. Best 2nd XV back was awarded to scrum half Stuart Kenny. Stuart has been with the club for many seasons and was a regular 1ST XV who is now helping a successful 2nd XV with his experience.
Captain’s awards went jointly to Simon Mustoe and Sean Williams for the 1st XV. Unfortunately Simon broke his ankle in a preseason friendly and Sean stepped into the breach until Simon returned midway through the season. The 2nd XV award went to outside half Tom Cole who was the side’s leading point’s scorer with 160 points.
A bouquet of flowers was presented to club stewardess Jan Jenkins.
The 1st XV finished a very creditable 8th in a very competitive Championship competing with former household names like Ebbw Vale, Pontypool, Newbridge and Cardiff Metropolitan. If their second half of the season had been mirrored in the first half they would have finished 2nd. It is hoped that they can take that form into next season. A highlight of the season was beating Cardiff at the Arms Park in a friendly in January. The same coaching team of head coach John Apsee, David Williams, Stuart Morris and Ian Greenslade will again be present this season, as will Team Manager Paul Hearne. Former club captain Matthew Hillman and Ospreys Development Officer Tom Cole will also assist with some training sessions. The club are also grateful to club physic Chloe Osterloft and her assistant Bob Lewis. Also match day and training assistants Phil Godwin, Neil Minchinton, Matthew Thomas and Ian Peploe. Thanks are also in order to photographers Graham Glenndinning of Glennsports and Kerry Fothergill for match day press and website photographs.
The 2nd XV had an excellent season finishing District League runners up losing to Heol Y Cyw in the playoff final after doing the double over them in actual league fixtures. Tony Griffiths will remain coach and Liam Griffiths Team Manager. The club would also like to thank Andrew Tellem for his match day assistance.
Senior training will commence at 6.30pm Tuesday 1st July at the Merthyr Mawr Sand dunes. New players at 1st & 2nd XV level very welcome to take part. For further details contact Team Manager Paul Hearne on 07970348065.
