They are currently negotiating to further strengthen the squad. A number of last seasons’ all conquering Welsh Youth Cup and Welsh League Athletic Youth side are joining the senior ranks – many have already featured in the senior ranks, to add to the competition for places and improve the club’s strength in depth.
Under coaches Paul Yardley, John Apsee and David Williams pre season training is underway at Newbridge Fields, with over 30 players attending the early sessions. Any one is invited to join the sessions at 6.30pm on Mondays and Thursdays. The club run two senior sides so there is plenty of opportunity to get a game for varying standards of players. Bridgend Athletic POY Awards – 26th June 2009
Bridgend Athletic RFC recently held their 37th Annual Presentation Evening at the Heronstone Hotel to celebrate the most successful year in the club’s history. Guests of honour were Welsh and Ospreys Captain Ryan Jones, Wales and Blues scrum half Gareth Cooper whose father was an original playing member of the club, Huw Bennett, Wales and Ospreys hooker and Andrew Hore, Director of Rugby for the Ospreys Region and former Welsh conditioning coach.
Youth Secretary Mark Davies commenced the proceedings with a summary of achievements by the mini and junior sections of the club with presentations made to playing representatives of each team by Ryan Jones. The mini teams had a lot of success in various tournaments throughout the country and had two boys, Stuart Floyd-Ellis and Jak Robbins representing West Wales Under 11’s, both receiving ‘A’ caps. The junior section had tremendous success winning the Ospreys Cup Competitions at Under 16’s, Under 15’, Under 14’s, with the Under 12’s sharing their trophy in a drawn contest. The Under 13’s won the Ospreys plate Competition.
After dinner the Club Chairman Terry Coles gave a summary of the year and thanked all the people that helped to make this such a memorable season and made presentations to the sponsors without whom life would be very difficult. He then made the announcement that Adrian Burt, the club’s dedicated press officer was to be made a life member after many years of service to the club.
Club President Phil Rees then took over proceedings for the presentation of the awards and gave his usual humorous resume of events on and off the field throughout the season. The four Captains of the Senior and Youth teams were presented with a memento in recognition of their services throughout the year these being, Simon Mustoe 1st XV, Liam Griffiths 2nd XV, Ben Howe Youth and Sean Derrick Youth ‘Rags’. Next in line was the presentation of their Welsh Under 18’s jerseys to Welsh Captain Lloyd Peers and Matthew Morgan who both played in every game. A special presentation was then made to Rhys Webb in recognition of his elevation to the Ospreys squad and to his participation in the fantastic achievement by the Wales Sevens Squad in lifting the World Cup in Dubai. This was followed by the Youth awards.
Number eight Sean Derrick was voted Player of the Year for the ‘Rags’ with Michael Powell the best back. Sean Derrick was also top try scorer. The ‘Rags’ had a very successful inaugural season only losing one of their league fixtures and we look forward to this second Youth team being a permanent fixture in the club to assist in the smooth transition from Under 16’s into the elder age group.
Flanker Ben Howe, joint top try scorer with Mike Hathaway, was elected Youth Player of the Year. Ben was an outstanding player throughout his three year in Youth and led the team to an unbeaten season winning the Welsh Youth Cup, Welsh League Championship, Ospreys League and District Cup for the seventh time in nine years. Centre James Olds in his second season was awarded best Youth Back and can the club can look forward to even greater things from him next year. Top points scorer was scrum half Tom Davies. Outstanding back row forward Tom Morgan was awarded the Barry Morris Memorial Trophy for the Most Improved Player for the Youth and Robert Jones was rewarded with Clubman of the Year for his commitment and effort throughout the season.
The second XV had a highly successful season winning both the District League and Cup competitions. Forward Tom Howells in his first full season for the club was awarded Player of the Year.
After the disappointment of relegation from Division 1 last year the First XV bounced straight back to win Division Two West and return to Division 1 for the third time. With a healthy looking squad developing this summer, and several premiership players returning to the fold, the club is looking forward to being competitive in what is a very tough environment. A great point of interest for all rugby fans in the town will be the local derbies with Bridgend Ravens which hopefully will be played on Boxing Day and at Easter and should attract a good crowd.
Outstanding Second Row/Back Row Sean Williams received the Jeff Jenkins Trophy for Player of the Year for his consistently outstanding displays with full back Lyndsay McCausland awarded Best Back. Second Row Jamie Doherty was voted Most Improved Player in his first full season in the First XV and received the Darryl Dyke Memorial trophy.
The final award was for the prestigious Clubman of the Year which went to second team Captain Liam Griffiths for his hard work throughout the year and his efforts in organising the end of season club tour to Spain, which was a resounding success.
Head Coach Paul Yardley then made a short speech outlining his thoughts on the season past and our plans for the future who then handed on to Andrew Hore who finished off the evening with a few words of congratulation indicating that he was particularly impressed with the vibrancy and spirit of the club and that this spirit should enable us to continue our high level of achievement in the future.

BRIDGEND ATHLETIC RFC - SEASON 09/10
13/06/09
Following on from last year’s successful campaign, the Athletic senior squad is once again looking to strengthen and continue the success into this coming season in Division 1 West.
Paul Yardley will once again head the coaching team of John Apsee as attack coach and ever present David Williams as forwards coordinator, Paul Hearne remains in place as team manager for the 1st XV. Tony Griffiths again heads an experienced 2nd XV management team with Ian Holman and Andrew Morgan along side him. Hooker Simon Mustoe will lead the team for the fifth successive season, and is closing in on the club record of seven successive seasons held by his predecessor Stuart Morris. Stuart has once again made himself available for the new campaign.
A new innovation for this season will see the introduction of specialist attached coaches to oversee additional coaching sessions. These will include Kevin Ellis of Celtic Crusaders (defence) , Carl Yardley (fitness) , Andrew Millward of Ospreys (scrummaging) and Rob Howley will take several handling and skill classes throughout preseason. Saturday morning speed and fitness sessions are all ready underway at Newbridge Fields running track with a 10am start, all are welcome. Preseason training starts again Thursday 2nd July 6.30pm Newbridge Fields.
On the playing front all of last seasons senior squad are remaining, which is a sign of the confidence and team spirit that the players are looking to carry forward to this new season.
The senior team will benefit from a number of last season’s Welsh Youth Cup and Welsh League winners moving to the senior ranks. Among those Michael Hathaway, Tom Morgan, Matthew Norman, Lewis Davies, Ben Howe and Nathan Holman already have senior games under their belts. Another bonus for the club this coming season will see the return of old boys and former Welsh Under 18 caps brothers Rod and Johnny Jones from Bridgend. Their experience and playing ability will be an advantage to all.Other players considering a return to the club are second row Kyle Coulter after a stint in English 2 side Worthing and. full back Simon Evans from fellow league 1 side Corus . Props Carl Gregory and former Youth team captain Dai Price have resigned from Ogmore Vale. Senior management are also talking to other well known players who have shown an interest in joining the club. These players will be announced shortly. .We also have former Athletic players on dual registration from Aberavon and Pontypool.
The club are looking at next seasons campaign with an extreme optimism and self belief that not only can we consolidate, but remain a permanent fixture in Division 1 of the Swalec Leagues. Youth coaches Anthony Woodward and Mark Watts who guided the team to Welsh Youth Cup and League wins last season remain on board. With the newly formed Rags Youth side from last season made up mainly of former Under 16 players ready to become the nucleus of the new youth side, they should once again have a strong side and keep the conveyor belt of talent progressing to the senior side.
The Player of the Year award night is being held at the Heronston Hotel on Friday 26th June. Some tickets priced at £10 still remain.
Barrie Morris
Sadly on Friday February 20th Bridgend Athletic RFC and Mid Glamorgan District Rugby lost a true servant with the passing of Barrie Morris aged 65, at the Princess of Wales Hospital.
Barrie joined the committee of Bridgend Athletic RFC 30 years ago. He currently held the position of Treasurer, Fixture Secretary and was Promoter of fund raising at the club via a Supa Lota.Over the years Barrie did virtually every job in the club to help bring about its rise from Junior Union Rugby status to the 1st Division of the Asda League last season. He and his wife Eilian would make sandwiches and peal large bags of potatoes to feed the players after training. When the women’s section required a Bingo Caller on Friday Nights it was Barrie who stepped into the breach. He sorted out the kits, first aid as well as a host of other minor but necessary jobs to enable the club to prosper both on and off the field.
Barrie’s contributions were recognised by the club. He won Clubman of the Year on a number of occasions and was rewarded with Life Membership – a reward not given lightly.
As a player Barrie played Youth Rugby for Cefn and senior rugby at Maesteg, Kenfig Hill, Tondu and Llanharan, where he captained the side for a season. Aged over 40 he even turned out on one occasion when the Athletic 2ND XV were short and scored a try. On his retirement he took up refereeing for a few seasons. As well as his commitment to Bridgend Athletic RFC for over 20 years he was secretary of the Bridgend and District RFU, Treasurer of the District Youth and District Appointments Officer for Referees. As a mark of respect there was a minutes silence at all District fixtures last weekend.
His son Stuart is a playing legend at the Athletic. He has played for the last 16 season’s at both Youth and Senior rugby. He captained the1ST XV for 7 successive seasons, and is still playing outside half for the 1st XV. He holds the club point’s record with 334 points in a season.
As well as Stuart the club would like to offer their condolences to all Barrie’s family – in particular his wife Eilian and daughter Lynsey.
They say nobody is indispensable – but Bridgend Athletic and the District will certainly not find anybody as dedicated as Barrie. No one person will be able to replace him.
As a mark of respect all Senior and Youth Bridgend Athletic RFC games were called off last weekend.
The funeral takes place on Friday 27th Feb – 11.30am at Coychurch Crematorium.

Alan Griffiths – Former Bridgend Athletic RFC Coach
Bridgend Athletic RFC are saddened by the sudden passing of a former coach Alan Griffiths on Sunday 18th Jan.
Alan was the Athletic backs coach from 1997 – 2003. During that time he worked with forward coaches Richard Parrott and for the final three years with current head coach Paul Yardley. The club enjoyed considerable success during this period, rising in successive seasons from Division 5 to Division 2.As well as being a very diligent and conscientious coach Alan was also one of life’s gentlemen.
He was succeeded as backs coach by a former Athletic full back Huw Hathaway. Huw well remembers playing against Alan as a formidable opponent at full back for close rugby neighbours Tondu.
The Athletic will always be grateful to Alan’s contribution in helping them achieve the playing position they currently enjoy today.
The club extends its sympathy to all Alan’s family in particular his wife Irene and two children.

Jeff Jenkins – True Rugby Stalwart
Bridgend Athletic and Welsh Rugby lost a true friend with the sudden death of Club Trustee and Life Member Jeff Jenkins, who passed away on his 70th birthday on 24th November 2005.
Jeff and his friend Clive Easterbrook had the rare honour of becoming Life Members of two rugby clubs Ogmore Vale and Bridgend Athletic RFC.
Jeff saw active service with the South Wales Borderers in Malaya from 1955-57, reaching the rank of corporal. He never forgot his military background, and was extremely proud to be invited to inspect the Borderers when he returned to Malaya on a rugby tour.
He began a 10 year association with Ogmore Vale in 1957, playing in all positions in the pack and captaining the side for one season. The highlight of his career was scoring the only Ogmore Vale try against a strong Cardiff side, that played a fixture to commemorate the opening of a new clubhouse, that Jeff and Clive played a large part in building.
He then entered the administrative side of the game, joining the committee of Bridgend RFC. He later became Match Secretary, Selector and Baggage Man for Bridgend RFC. In 1972 he was approached by Phil Rees and Brian Lewis, two members of the Bridgend Youth team, who had the idea of keeping the side together and forming a senior side - Bridgend Athletic.
Jeff took on this challenge and became the first Athletic Chairman. He enrolled his friend Clive Easterbrook as coach, and hence started the current Bridgend Athletic Team. From this inauspicious start, with the enthusiasm of people like Jeff, the club has gone from strength to strength. They acquired their own clubhouse in 1982, and are currently running two senior sides, a youth side, as well as sides in all age groups from Under 8 to Under 16, providing rugby for over two hundred players from the borough.
Jeff has left a lasting legacy with the club. He set up and administered the excellent jersey cabinets and array of club shields around the clubhouse. His final proud action was to include in his cabinets the Welsh Jersey provided by Lee Byrne – the first Athletic based player to gain a full Welsh cap.
Bridgend Athletic and Welsh rugby owe a great debt to the Jeff Jenkins of this world – often unsung, but without whose efforts the grassroots of rugby would find it difficult to survive.
A personal tribute to Jeff Jenkins by Phil Rees, Club President..
It was with great shock and sadness that today I heard the news that one of the great stalwarts of our Club , Jeff Jenkins, passed away suddenly yesterday evening on his 70th birthday.
When the rugby fraternity talk of ‘characters’ they don’t award that accolade lightly and Jeff was certainly a ‘character’ of the highest order and his company was enjoyed by everyone who knew him, across all walks of life.
I first met Jeff when I was a youngster playing for Bridgend Youth. Jeff would occasionally take time out to talk to us in the bar after Bridgend games but at that time I did not realize that it would be the start of a long and enduring friendship. On our Easter Tour to Plymouth and Torquay we made the momentous decision to form our own club as we did not want to go our separate ways and Bridgend Athletic was formed. Our coach Tom Farmer suggested to myself and Brian Lewis that he knew a good bloke who would be ideal to help in this venture and that someone was Jeff Jenkins. What a recommendation, and Jeff in turn recruited his great pal Clive Easterbrook to give us the experience we needed to go forward.
Jeff became the first Chairman of Bridgend Athletic and held the position for six years guiding us with his typically forthright, honest and fair views. There was only one way for Jeff and that was the right way, always setting high standards for himself and everything that we did as a club. It says much about Jeff that he and his big mate Clive were already life members of Ogmore Vale RFC, a reward for their efforts in building that club and that they were still prepared all over again to repeat that level of dedication to be awarded that rare honour in becoming life members of our own club. I know of no other persons to have achieved that double feat.
Just to give you an example, Jeff used to walk from Ewenny to Ogmore Vale to work on the club and then walk back again. That was probably down to his military training and his time spent with the Army in Malaya. Jeff was a great tourist and we learned the hard way that there was one person’s room you raided at your peril. I remember retreating from his room at great speed with objects flying around my head on our first tour to Plymouth and I dread to think what I would have had if I got close enough, the bayonet or the rifle butt. No one messed with Jeff and I know that his co-workers on the building sites around South Wales also scattered at great speed any time that Jeff had in his possession a dangerous tool or weapon.
In his day Jeff was a fine, uncompromising forward, although I personally did not see him play until he amazingly made his debut for the Athletic at full back against Neath Athletic at the age of 38. Jeff went on to become Match Secretary of Bridgend RFC for many years but always maintained his contact with the Athletic.
Jeff made many friends in Bridgend RFC and he always used to laugh at the story when committeeman Bill Vaughan’s wife once asked ‘who is that tall grey haired man with the moustache that looks like the actor Claude Raines, but swears a lot more’. That was Jeff he was himself in any company, full of stories, good humour, irreverent humour even and always plenty of stick for Dai Dobbs.
Jeff was a Trustee of the club for many years and followed the club home and away until the end. He recently had a health check and was informed that he had previously had a heart attack that he did not know about. Knowing Jeff, he probably simply ignored it and carried on with his life as if nothing had happened.
A memorial to Jeff in the club is the wonderful collection of jerseys, plaques and memorabilia which is almost totally down to Jeff and there was often a story behind the sometimes dubious methods of acquisition. Jeff always carried a screwdriver in his pocket.
I have lost a good friend. The club has lost a good friend . His family have lost a beloved one and I would like to offer his closest ones the deepest condolences of everyone in Bridgend Athletic RFC.
My Friend Jeff Jenkins – Clive Easterbrook
My friendship with Jeff started when we were both posted to Malaysia with the South Wales Borderers, and served there from1955-57. Jeff reached the rank of Corporal and never forgot his military background. He was extremely proud, when on a later rugby tour to Malaysia he was invited to inspect the troops of the South Wales Borderers. We played rugby for the Army during this time.
On return to civvy street I resumed playing for my home town club Tondu, while Jeff began a 10 year association with Ogmore Vale. After two seasons at Tondu, Jeff persuaded me to join him at Ogmore Vale, and we enjoyed 8 wonderful seasons together. Jeff played in every position in the pack, starting in the back row and working his way forward to lock and finally prop forward. The highlight of his playing career was when Cardiff brought a full strength side to Ogmore Vale to commemorate the opening of their new clubhouse. Their front row that day contained all time greats Howard Norris, Billy Williams and John O’Shea. Jeff scored the lone Ogmore Vale try. For our playing service and the help we gave in building the new clubhouse we were both made Life Members of Ogmore Vale RFC.
In 1967 Jeff, though playing the odd game at Bridgend Sports and Cowbridge, started in the Administrative side of the game. He became a Bridgend RFC Committee man, and later Fixture Secretary, a Selector and Baggage Man for the club.
In 1972 he was approached by two Bridgend Youth players Phil Rees and Brian Lewis, who wanted to keep the side together and form a Senior Club. He agreed to help and became the first Bridgend Athletic Chairman. He approached me to coach the side, and thus our rugby affair continued until the present time. We were both very proud to be made Life Members of the Athletic, and Jeff along with Peter Woods, Malcolm Sawyer and the late David Williams became the first Trustees of the club. Jeff occasionally turned out for the Athletic, making his final appearance as prop on a tour to Newcastle Under Lyme at the age of 42. We have continued to support the club since starting in 1972.
He was always doing odd jobs around the club, and set up and administrated the excellent Jersey Cabinets and selection of club shields around the clubhouse. When I look at them they will provide me and the club with a lasting legacy of one of the true stalwarts of Welsh Rugby, and memories of a remarkable friend.
Clive Easterbrook.

Gerwyn (Big "G")
Died Aug 2008
Phil Rees Tribute to Gerwyn at Coity Crematorium
First of all, on behalf of Linda, the boys and all the family, I would like to thank you all for turning out in such numbers to pay respect to the passing of our great friend Gerwyn.
Gerwyn was a larger than life character and the sheer force and range of his personality enabled him to successfully interact with people across all walks of life.
I had known Gerwyn for over thirty years and you simply had to take him as he was, warts and all, he simply was not afraid to be himself or to express himself. He was as straight as a die and whatever his feelings were you’d soon know about them.
Depending on who you were or what you had done he might have hugged you or he might have thumped you. I personally preferred the former. Ian Russell jokingly suggested the other night that possibly half the congregation that would turn up today had suffered the alternative fate at some point in time.
The second son of Dwynwen and Gwyn, Gerwyn was an active youngster who loved the outdoors. He was very fond of and interested in wildlife, always risking life and limb climbing trees to any height either for the sheer love of it or to get the prized goal of a few birds eggs for his collection. On getting back to the bottom the boys would ask ‘well where are the eggs Gerwyn? and he would open his mouth and pull out his trophies from their secure environment.. He forced brother Meirion to learn this climbing skill much against his wishes but ‘G’ in his own inimitable way left him no choice, just get up there, Meirion.
Always up to something, he returned from one of his wildlife safaris one day with three squirrels, one of whom, named Percy, survived as the household pet for five years.
If he wasn’t out in the country, racing gambos down the lane or getting up to other mischief with his friends he could probably have been found on the farm where he spent a lot of his time, chasing rats and doing usual farming things.
After a day’s work they would all sit around the kitchen table and have a massive farmer’s feast in the old fashioned way. One day Gerwyn had stuffed himself so stupid he felt the need for relief and headed off to the crude outhouse oblutions.
As he was hovering over the hole in the floor he was startled when he heard a voice calling his name once and then a second time. He looked around not seeing anybody but then glanced through his legs at the hole in the floor and was shocked to find Farmer Jones on the level below clearing up after him with a shovel. Not a pretty sight.
On one occasion at the Royal Welsh Show a very young Meirion was sat on a display tractor and Gerwyn forcibly suggested to him that it would be a good idea to press his foot down on one of the pedals. As he did so Gerwyn turned the key, Meirion panicked and jumped off and his father Gwyn was last seen chasing the Massey Fuergeson down the showground in a desperate attempt at damage limitation.
Of course antics like this led to inevitable repurcussions as Gwyn possessed a Hazel stick which he kept above the mirror to punish such behaviour and a good thrashing would follow. But Gerwyn thinking that he was ever one step ahead thought he’d cure this and snapped the stick and left it above the mirror. But his plan backfired and upon this discovery a furious Gwyn merely went into the other room to get his reserve stick and it was more than Gerwyn’s pride that suffered.
Although frequently getting himself and his brothers in trouble Gerwyn was hugely protective of them although the quieter Arwel didn’t need such help as even Gerwyn was wary of him. There was one occasion in the old outdoor Bridgend Swimming Baths when G was indulging in one of his favourite pastimes of diving. He was a great diver having no fear of heights and could frequently be seen swallow diving off the top Olympic board in the Afan Lido, whistling to himself all the way down.
Anyway while Gerwyn was at the top of the diving platform in Bridgend, younger brother David, who could not swim, was pushed into the pool by an older boy. David recalls that as he struggled in panic to paddle to the side he saw G rush down from the platform thinking he was going to dive in and save him but there was other business to attend to first and instead of rescue he heard the crack of fist upon jawbone and the sight of this bully slowly descending into the deep end .
Gerwyn had a great sense of honesty and fair play and always stood up for other people and not just his family and friends, but his justice was usually dispensed a little swifter than conventional law.
Then came the later teenage years and all that comes with it. Learning to drive with Lino in the clapped out Moskvich, screeching around town like the Ant Hill Mob. He joined the very first Athletic Youth team along with his friends from the Inter, that famous academy or rugby talent on that side of town. And of course there was the introduction to drinking and the Palais de Danse. Gerwyn loved dancing, always trying to teach his skills to his brothers, but failing miserably. He loved Reggae and had a natural and unique sense of rhythm, once winning a competition in the rec. centre for which he wasn’t originally entered.
His Saturday nights followed the same pattern. The Palais, a few drinks, a Dance, a quick ruck , a Chinese and home. He liked nothing better. As time wore on the pattern changed somewhat as the men in blue got wise to his antics and grabbed him every saturday as he came out of the Palais door and chucked him in the Black Maria before he had a chance to do any damage.
When that famous Dance musical, Grease came to the Embassy Cinema in Bridgend there was no way Gerwyn was going to miss that and on the second night he brought the house down. Early in the film there is a scene with mooning involved and there was Gerwyn with perfect timing on the stage baring all and back in his seat before the owner’s flashlight could highlight the culprit.
In July 1975 he started his first job with Glyn Jones Builders on Moor farm making blocks. He went on to work for many builders as the years went on and it was while working on Riverside Surgery in 1983 that he first came into contact with Linda.
Although Gerwyn would flirt in his own inimitable way it was Linda who made all the running and she used to literally chase him up Morfa Street where he would hide from her clutches. She chased him incessantly from the Chateau to Drones until they got married in 1989, on April Fool’s day. Linda didn’t even trust him not to run away on that day as she thought it might have been another one of his jokes and all marriage tradition was broken when Linda insisted that he travel to the Church in the wedding car with her to ensure his attendance.
Gerwyn’s wilder days were now behind him, he even crossed the divide and had a spell as a bouncer in the Chateau. He had become an established second row with the Athletic First Team, he was now ‘Big G’, a skilful player with good, soft hands. We had fantastic times over the years in the Athletic and Gerwyn played his fair share of the pranks that went on at home and abroad and he was one of the Worcester six that let a residential barge loose down the River Avon at midnight only for it to be saved by getting stuck under the bridge just before the weir. We all got arrested for that and hours later in the identity parade the old couple in their bedroom gear were walking down the line to nail the culprits when Gregs and Mike John jumped out of the line and shouted ‘That’s her’. We got off.
And for those who witnessed it who could ever forget his hilarious performances of the ‘Here we go’ military song with Meirion, particularly to the Japanese and Canadian tourists.
He wasn’t good at everything though. Of all the people who came on our skiing trips over the years only Tim Pound was a worse skier and Gerwyn played tennis with a serve that Julian Clary would have been proud of and a temper to match McEnroe any day.
All four brothers played for the Athletic and so did Gareth, Chris and Daniel but Gerwyn hated Linda watching him play for some strange reason. More recently he took great pride in watching Tom play but sadly missed the chance to see him play his first game for the Ospreys Under 16’s. He would have loved that.
By the concerted opinion of his brothers, Gerwyn was the one most likely to display his emotions with a hug or a kiss to his loved ones. He took aspects of the characters of both Gwyn and Dwynwen. From Gwyn he inherited the need to hoard things and catalogue them in his meticulous manner. He was incredibly tidy with his shed being a prime example of how everything had to be in exactly the right place until Linda and Rhian found the keys one day and rearranged the whole lot. He went mad.
He loved gossip, preferably over a cup of tea and some cake, as long as Jackie hadn’t made it. He could mix with all ages and in recent years loved his Sunday night card games with the old boys down the ex-servicemen’s club, followed by some arm wrestling with the over eighties.
He knew so many people and could always be heard tooting the horn of his lorry at friends as he transported materials from site to site.
He was bubbly and always brought a smile to your face, a massive old fashioned character but most of all he was a devoted husband, father, stepfather, grandfather and friend and deserved more.
Everyone I have talked to simply cannot believe he has gone and when we go in the club afterwards I am sure there will be a lot of us who will almost half expect to see him in the corner with a story to tell.
But ‘Big G’ will be there in spirit and with us all for a long, long time.
Thank you.

Bridgend Athletic Honour Lee Byrne
Bridgend Athletic held a sell out fund raising dinner at its clubhouse to honour the most illustrious player in its history Lee Byrne.
The event was very successful-both in its tribute to Wales Grand Slam winner full back Lee and in raising funds to promote rugby within the club at all levels from Under 7 to Youth and finally senior level. Lee has come through the Mini & Junior section, Youth and played in the Senior Athletic side, being leading try scorer with 24 tries in his final season with the Athletic. He also helped the Athletic reach the Silver Ball Final.
The event was brilliantly compared by BBC Rugby commentator Phil Steele – himself a former Wales B International when playing for Newport. Significantly Phil was once a teacher in the Bridgend Area – actually teaching Lee and coaching his school rugby side. Lee was then a No 8. Lee’s friend and fellow Wales and Osprey outside half James Hook also attended. At a question and answer session with Lee, James and Phil, Lee was asked his best moment playing for Wales. He replied – his try against England. When James was asked the same question his response was putting Lee over for that try. Lee’s most disappointing moment was his omission from the Wales World Cup Squad. He again showed the fighting character that he showed to recover from two career threatening injuries and resolved to work even harder to regain his Wales place. Warren Gatland gave him his opportunity and he never looked back – playing the best rugby of his career to date.
Club president and life member Phil Rees (a founding member of the club) gave his usual humorous speech outlining Lee’s career at the club, and his notorious associates and some of their escapades during their Athletic playing careers. In fairness to Lee he has not forgotten either the club or his friends and actually paid for tables to invite them along. He is always willing to attend presentation nights for all ages within the club. A DVD was also put together showing Lee’s best moments during the Grand Slam season. This was presented to Lee after showing in the club. Another life member Chairman Terry Coles presented Lee with a memento of his time with the Athletic. Let’s hope maybe next year we can again honour Lee as the first British Lion from the Athletic. If he can repeat his Grand Slam displays of last season – he is as good as on the plane already.
Fellow life member and club founder Brian Lewis acted as Auctioneer on the night. The club are very grateful to all donors of auction items. Among the items were Lee’s EDF Cup winning Osprey’s shirt and a special edition signed Grog of himself in a Welsh Jersey. James Hook presented a pair of his Grand Slam winning Boots. Ian Holman presented a Welsh Jersey worn by Gareth Bale and Keith Miles a limited edition 1995 World Cup Final photograph showing South Africa’s winning drop goal. Gerald McCarthy Operation Manager for the Celtic Crusaders was extremely generous to the club. He presented 2 hospitality tickets for Man City V Man Utd, a signed Celtic Crusaders Shirt and a Corporate Table for 10 for the Crusaders – Whitehaven game. He also promised a bucket collection for the Athletic at the Whitehaven game – where they are anticipating a large crowd. Thanks are due to all the persons who so generously bid for and purchased all the above items, and the persons who purchased the tables and their guests for making the event such a success.
The club are extremely grateful to Lee, James Hook and Phil Steele for making the event possible. They would like to thank the main organisers of the event trustees David Davison and David Burt and Brian Lewis. Also member Eric Thomas who helped with the organisation on the day, Bob Lewis for helping collect and arrange the tables and Father Tim McGraph of St Mary’s Catholic Church for once again kindly loaning the tables. They would also like to thank Vale Caterers who provided an excellent meal and also a buffet for club players, coaches and officials to attend following the official dinner. Club stewardess Cheryl Pound and her bar staff of Heather and Gayle who also worked extremely hard on the day.

David is currently in charge of organising the club photograph display and has recently become involved in raising Sponsorship for the Club He is organising the Banner Sponsorship down the Fields on Match Days.
David has given us a few words on his Brisgend Athletic backgroud.
I got to know a number of the newly formed Athletic players and commitee when I passed my WRU exams and refereed them in a few games and started training with them at Bryntirion. After a couple of seasons I realised that I wasn't going to challenge Clive Norling and Clive Eastbrook over a couple of pints bribed me to help start up a Youth team.I ended up being appointed Youth Secretary in 1976 and did this job and committeeman for 7 years. When I started we were based in Bridgend Rugby Club, then moved to the Cambrian Hotel (now the Roof) for one season then bought the WEXA(present club). Players and Commitee worked tremendously hard to transform this rundown club to new BARFC headquarters but they were great times. Unfortunately I produced 2 girls and no boys so pressures in transporting daughters to dancing, singing and swimming etc instead of rugby. However I have remained a member and supporter of the club for over 30years and it is a priviledge and honour to be appointed a club trustee following that great club stalwart Jeff Jenkins.

Phillip a local player has joined the Athletic Youththis season. Kyle while still eligible for the Youth Team has made 11 1st XV appearances this season.
Press Release
Bridgend Athletic RFC
This Saturday February 17th will possibly see Bridgend Athletic RFC 1st and Youth sides top Division 1 West of the Asda League, and Division A of the Welsh Youth League. In both cases the top teams Bonymaen and Bonymaen Youth are the sides they have to overcome, in mouth watering home fixtures at Newbridge Fields.
Bonymaen are the current Division 1 Champions and lead the Athletic by two points with a game in hand. They have played 16 games with 378 points for and 226 against, crossing for 42 tries. The Athletic have 370 points for 288 against and are the Division’s leading try scorers with 45 tries. A potentially high scoring game, with the Athletic defending an unbeaten 9 match winning home sequence this season, is in the offing, to hopefully attract a large crowd. Coaches Huw Hathaway, David Williams and Paul Yardley set the newly promoted side a mid table target for the season. Their young side have confounded all at the club, and are now targeting a top three finish. They also reached the fifth round of the Konica Minolta Cup.
Whereas the majority of Division 1 West sides are semi professional, with wage bills up to £80,000 per annum, the Athletic rely entirely on an Amateur approach and the loyalty and team spirit of the players they have developed. 30 of the 33 players who have donned the Athletic shirt in Div 1 West this season have at least played for the Athletic Youth side. Some have come all the way through the Under 8- Under 16 age groups, and Youth team. Currently the Athletic have 256 registered Mini & Junior players and are extremely grateful to the commitment of players, coaches, committee officials and parents, for making that section of the club so successful. This was recognised, when the Secretary of the Mini Section Mandy Pickford, was voted Club Person of the Year for last season. Current Welsh International Lee Byrne started with the Athletic Under 8 side and played at all levels including Senior Level at the club. Due to the hard work of Youth Coaches Phil Rees, Mark Davies and Steve Penry-Ellis last season 5 Athletic Youth players won Wales Under 18 caps, and 4 players Luke Hathaway, Kyle Maiden, Phillip Price and Rhys Webb have been selected for the current Wales Under 19 FIRA World Cup squad.
The success of the club is all the more remarkable as the coaches and players have to work with sub standard training facilities. BCBC in a meeting with club officials and A.M. Mr Carwyn Jones, have agreed to release money that was set aside, to upgrade the training facilities at Newbridge Fields. They promised in that meeting to have a new training field with floodlights in place for the commencement of season 2007-2008. The club are also communicating with the Council to upgrade the antiquated changing rooms that are in a very poor state of repair, offering to assist with the repairs. They are easily the worse in the Borough and probably the worse the Athletic have encountered, as they have progressed through the leagues. It is a constant source of embarrassment and many clubs have complained about them – even suggesting we should not be allowed to compete in Division 1 West, unless we upgrade our facilities. With the club offering so many of the youth of Bridgend a healthy sporting life, it deserves the support of the Borough.
The current team is very young. Only scrum half John Doherty and centre Stuart Morris are over 25. Five of the players who have turned out for the senior side are still eligible to play Youth Rugby. Club captain hooker Simon Mustoe, who led the side to promotion to Div 1 West last season, at the age of 22, is the youngest ever Athletic captain. Stuart Morris is the leading point’s scorer with 141 points, followed by outside half Stephen Lewis on 92 points. The leading try scorers are wing Rhodri Davies 14, centre Robert Coles 12 and full back Marc Bennett with 10 tries. Mustoe and No 8 Dan Apsee have played in all 17 league games. Other major appearances – Robert Coles, Stuart Morris and Neil Thomas 16, Stephen Lewis 15, Rhodri Davies, Carl Gregory, Marc Bennett and Chris Whitcombe 14 and Andrew Brown and Jonathon Stoker 13.

John Naisbitt
John has decided to retire from playing rugby and has taken on the role of Head Coach at Ogmore Vale. The club would like to thank him for his service to the club, both from a playing point of view and his generous sponsorship through his company Cabsite. We wish him well in his new venture and hope he will still visit us at the club, where he has been very supportive. The Little Red Rooster will have to come back to see us.
John played 30 times in season 2003-2004 when the club were promoted to Division 1 of the National Leagues, and 22 times during the season in Division 1. He has been instrumental in passing on his great scrummaging knowledge to the benefit of all the young props that have played alongside him.
Despite his age he has turned out six times for the club this season. Whenever he has been on the field the scrum has not taken a backward step, and has provided a sound platform for our backs to attack. Once again thanks for the help you have given the club and Best Wishes for the future at Ogmore Vale. Former Ogmore Vale Captain Jeff Jenkins will be keeping an eye on you from above, as will current Life Member Clive Easterbrook who also turned out for the Valley side. Jeff and Clive also helped build the Ogmore Vale Clubhouse, and had and have the distinction of being Life Members of two clubs.

Mrs. Mandy Pickford,
Secretary,
BARFC Mini & Junior Section,
Dear Mandy,
On behalf of the Friends of Bridgend Athletic RFC 100 Club, I am delighted to enclose a cheque for £1,000 which I shall be obliged if you will distribute £100 to each age group within the Mini & Junior Section. Hopefully, it will be a small contribution towards the excellent work being done in every group.
The 100 Club was set up many years ago with the aim of supporting and promoting rugby football at all ages within the Club. Members of the 100 Club pay a sum of £2 per month by standing order, half of which is then distributed in monthly prizes, with the remainder being retained for the purpose stated. In March & September each year, there are two bumper draws when all the monthly contribution is paid out. Membership numbers currently just exceed 100, but there is always room for more. The more members, the more funds there are to distribute.
If it meets with the agreement of you and your fellow committee, I would like to incentivise each age group to produce more members of the 100 Club. For the foreseeable future, the 100 Club will contribute £50 for each five new members to the age groups which produce them. Ideally, I would prefer this to be coordinated
through you as a single point of contact; I will then send the age group cheque to you.
Joining the 100 Club is simple, although it should be considered a long term commitment. All that needs to be done is to fully complete a copy of the enclosed standing order and pass it to you for sending to me. I will then acknowledge direct to the new member advising their draw number. Results are pinned to the Club Notice Board each month.
Knowing how hard it is to repeatedly raise funds, hopefully my suggestion is one that will meet with favour. I look forward to hearing from you and thank you and all concerned for the fantastic contribution being made to the overall success of the Ath.
Yours sincerely,
DAVID T BURT
BARFC Patron & Trustee.

Jeff Jenkins – True Rugby Stalwart
Bridgend Athletic and Welsh Rugby lost a true friend with the sudden death of Club Trustee and Life Member Jeff Jenkins, who passed away on his 70th birthday on 24th November.
